Greta Thunberg with The 1975

"The 1975"

From the editors:

Greta Thunberg’s words and actions came to our attention as part of a separate project around social media and activism—how words, images, and inspirations amplify through their cycling and circulating. How crowds form through distant connections of masses of people acting independently, but together.

…amplifying Arshak Makichyan’s solitary protests in Moscow, as one-man pickets are the only form of demonstration not requiring a permit.

…amplifying and elevating photos of simple protest signs from children around the world and giving them a collective voice, actually and symbolically.

…bringing together en masse the thousands protesting alone or in small groups through her Fridays for Future.

Like many of you, we’ve watched her grow over the past two years.

The symbolism of this young teenager sitting in front of parliament, taking the world by storm through simple gestures echoed and repeated globally…her ability to speak to other children and engage them directly…her amplifying the voices of scientists rarely heard on mainstream media…

Not only finding a voice, but creating spaces to be heard.

The 1975 invited her to speak on their track The 1975, released on the eve of September 2019’s global climate strike, amplifying her voice in a new medium. At Greta’s request, all proceeds from their collaboration are supporting the work of Extinction Rebellion.
